Education: Initial education was in the village Govt. school, Gadh. Most probably till the 5 standard he studied in the school in the village.
He was a matriculate from the Rajputi School. This was the traditional school for the rajputs of Jammu. It is said that Maharaja Hari Singh used to get a plate of food from the school every day in order to maintain the quality of food for the students.
Occupation: He joined the 9 J&K regiment as an Other Rank. The J&K regiment was part of the state forces of the Maharaja. He has served in NWFP during his service in the J&K regiment. He served in the Poonch during the 1948 war. He was in the siege of the Poonch garrison where two companies of the 9 JAK were surrounded by the Pakistani Army. He was awarded a “mention in dispatch” for his services rendered in the same.
After independence the regiment was merged into the Indian Army and he became part of 9 Jakrif. He was in the training centre at Satwari as an adjutant of the training battalion. In those days of the fifties he cycled from the house in Fattu Chogan to Satwari. As part of 9 JAKRIF he served in Chaubattia (Uttranchal), the North Eastern states including Indo-Burma borders; in the Uri Sector in the 1962 operations. On deputation to the TA he served in Dhrangdhara (Gujarat), and Chakki Bank (Punjab). He subsequently was posted to the training centre at Gwalior (MP). He had a major heart attack in 1966 when he was stationed in Gwalior. He retired from service in 1967.
After retirement he came to a house in Fattu Chagan in Jammu city, a house which he had constructed some time 1950.
He maintained a strict regimen of food and meals, in terms of timing and ingredients of the food. Though most of the credit for maintaining this schedule should go to his wife who used to manage the complete household. He was strict and quiet in nature. He would not get too involved in household work as he was very conscious of his health.
